music = life

All around the globe music is part of our life.

It gives us motivation and boost us mentally, emotionally, and provide us with the latent energy of life inside us.

How does music influence our lives?

Music has a huge influence on our lives. Music somehow changes the situation in our mind helps us to think and feel better about us and the beautiful world we live in. Thus somehow making this world a better place.

There is music available for almost every possible situation and people connect their feelings to music.

Sometimes music describes different phases we have gone through in our life like a time machine and sometimes it gives us hope of a better life ahead.

But have you ever thought what kind of musical instruments and spirit does it take to make our music a masterpiece?

As the sole purpose of us here at musicmella is to make musical instruments more recognizable…

There are hundreds and thousands of musical instruments around the world with their own unique and ear-pleasing sounds.

So to categorize properly there are different families of musical instruments.

The basis on which we decide the families of musical instruments:
  • The family in which the instrument lies has nothing to do with the material it is made of.
  • The method used to correctly classify them is by the way that instrument produces sound.

Once it is determined that how the instrument is played it is placed into a family.

Different Families of instruments

There are 4 families of instruments in the orchestra. Each family is classified by the way they produce sound.

  1. Strings
  2. Woodwinds
  3. Brass
  4. Percussion

As the name itself tells these instruments to include strings.

String instruments produce sound with 3 methods:

  • bowing
  • plucking
  • strumming

The smaller the string instrument the higher the pitch and vice versa.

some examples are Violin, Viola, Cello, Veena, etc.

Woodwind instruments simply produce sound by blowing air(wind) to it.

They consist of wooden reeds and that is why the name is woodwinds.

Sometimes the wind is used to vibrate single reed or double reed. An exception to woodwind is Flute it does not contain a reed.

some examples are Saxophone, Flute, Oboe, etc.

These instruments produce sounds by buzzing the lips into mouthpieces. Lips are rubbed on the surface of the instruments.

To change the notes the shape of lips is changed, tenser the lip higher the pitch and vice versa.

some examples are trumpet, horn, euphonium, etc.

These instruments are placed at the last of the orchestra.

Percussion instruments produce sound by hitting, shaking, or scraping their instruments.

Percussion techniques can also be applied to the human body, as in body percussion

some examples are: Drum, snare drum, marimba, bell, etc.

Almost all the instruments that play in Orchestra fall into these families but some instruments are exceptions.

There are some families of musical instruments that do not lie under Orchestra:

  • Guitar
  • Keyboard
  • Electronic instruments

Guitar and keyboard some times play with an orchestra but they are designed as solo instruments.

electronic music

Electronic instruments have been around since the electricity is readily available. They produce sound electronically in an artificial way by electronic amplification.

Sometimes you have hybrid instruments such as electronic guitar.

So next time you listen to music with instruments sees if you can correctly classify them.
